Tigers in The Highlands of Central India

The sal forests, meadows and ravines of central India hold the finest tiger country on earth. Travelling slowly between the reserves — tracking on foot where permitted, long mornings in the vehicle, afternoons on the rivers — this is a journey built for the patient photographer who wants to meet the Bengal tiger on its own terms.

The journey

An Introduction

Central India is one of the last places on the subcontinent where a tiger can still disappear into a landscape large enough to hold it. Over two or three reserves, we move between the hard-ground meadows of Kanha, the cliffs and fort of Bandhavgarh, the ravines of Panna and the quiet sal of Satpura — each with its own light, its own photography and its own way of seeing the cat.
